We have studied the issues associated with the genocide in Rwanda. We have also watched the movie in an attempt to understand what happened. Today’s lesson is a summary of what we have learnt, and will provide you with a chance to reflect and analyse why the genocide occurred.

We will watch the end of the movie, then view the following you tube clips on Rwanda 2 years and 15 years after the genocide.

Coming Home – The Movie Trailer

After the Genocide – Rwanda – This you tube focuses on the change in the status and importance of women in Rwanda following the genocide.

Rwanda Revisted – An overview of some of the economic and social issues following the genocide.

Your Task

Put together a podcast (using Garageband or iMovie) that provides a very brief overview of what the Rwandan Genocide was, why it occurred and what impact it had on the country. When looking at the impacts, consider how the economy was effected, the huge movement of people (refugees), the change in demographic and social structure and what international governments have learnt from this conflict. You may choose to look at the genocide in general, or one specific area and provide detail. This task will be assessed as an S/N and must be handed in as part of your first outcome. It is due on Friday 18th July.

The podcast you create could follow the structure of the one below. I found this on YouTube. It was put together by school students who hope to start a human rights group at school. It was interesting due to the comparisons it made with similar conflicts in Europe (holocaust, armenia) and that it also looked at the continuation of similar issues in other African countries such as the Congo and Darfur. Be aware that some people may find some of the images in this presentation disturbing. Don’t watch if you don’t want to!

Make sure you acknowledge the song if you use one. I also encourage you to use creative commons rather than google images – as there are issues with copyright.
